My abstracts often begin somewhere between a sketch, some play and exploration. That play then merges with imagination and design. I take in what I see both from what is in front of me and what could be. Sometimes I proceed right away and other times a piece may sit for days or months before moving to the next phase.
Making art is a process of curiosity, discovery, and healing for me. My journey began after an apartment break-in. When I had trouble with PTSD and sleeping, I found that a handmade quilt made by someone else and praise music brought me comfort. I thought about the time, care, and work that went into that quilt. I imagined the love in the making and it brought me moments of peace.
I later saw some quilts showing at a local library. I saw that a quilt was more than just utilitarian. It could be a piece of art! My imagination began running. I Imagined patterns and designs and started making my own during another difficult time and it saved my mind.
Since then I have learned to do many things. I went back to college for studio art and graphic design and started teaching in my community a variety of arts. I am thankful to God for giving me the opportunity to share how healing the arts can be.
