This painting came from an image I saw in prayer. It came shortly after I first felt God leading me into trusting him in a greater way with my finances. I saw a hand come down and place a folded napkin on top of a bamboo bowl or tea cup. Then I saw a pretzel placed on top of a folded napkin.
When I looked this up, I found that a folded napkin represented 'the master's return'. In times past if master a master folded his napkin before going to the bathroom or stepping out, he signaled that he would return. If you crumpled it, he was done.
A cup is often associated with one's lot or portion. For example, when Christ was in the garden of Gethsemane:
"Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Mt. 26:39)
Bamboo is a very strong material. God will give us the strength that we are in need of when we ask.
"But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Cor.12:9-10)
Finally, long ago the pretzel was a symbol of providence. It would be given to the poor as a symbol of both spiritual and providential blessing. Pretzels were also given as a reward to school children for learning their prayers.
